Students around the world have been taking their classes online due to the ongoing pandemic but many miss going to school… and a group of students made school a reality from their own homes!
A group of students from Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TARUC) decided to create their beloved campus in Minecraft!
The video that was uploaded on YouTube shows the campus that was built in the gaming platform with the description, “when the school announced that classes will be conducted online I didn’t expect a school to appear online. Everything is so real and even my friends are…??”
The video starts off with the students taking a bus to the campus’ main entrance and they even have their student IDs “checked” by the security guard.
They were then seen hanging out at the basketball court and it looks uncanny compared to the real one!
The university bus can be seen parked at the bus stop next to the football field and the details compared to the actual campus looks really similar.
The students even have their own carnival called “Little Times” that was taking place at the cafeteria area with “special performances” going on.
The event was supposed to be held in campus but was cancelled due to the Movement Control Order and they decided to build it in Minecraft for other students to experience the unrevealed event.
Netizens are impressed with the details of the campus with many asking if they can join the world that’s currently not made available to the public and others asking if the group can build one for their university too.
The students behind the video told HITZ that they are a part of the Chinese Language Society from TARUC called the Shen Ma Dynamic Dance Class and the Minecraft project was two months in the making!
“Two months was taken for us to successfully cover 30% surface area of the entire TARUC, starting from the Main Gate.”
“It all started back in 10 April, when one of us in the group noticed people on Facebook building their own college, and we decided to build our own TARUC campus.”
They revealed that it started with 5 active members and worked their way to a 14 member group. They also realised that the video could serve a greater purpose too!
“We realised that this project of ours can be used for a greater purpose, that is to create videos to introduce our school to the new intake students as well as for those who miss our school during this MCO period.”
The group revealed that “modifying the server was the greatest challenge, where the Internet port forwarding and mods installations had to be done correctly for the members to join the server.”
“The main tools used were the functions of the google maps, including the satellite view and street views, to judge the scale as well as the distances of each structures relatively. Besides, we relied on our memories as well as photos taken in the school to create the familiarity of our school to make it as similar as possible to the reality.”
“The process may be dull, however, through communicating with one another in the process, it was fun working together with our friends to recreate the places full of memories in our college life.”
The Shen Ma group often has activities for students to cultivate their team spirit and promote interpersonal communication, enhance team building and more.
They said that one of the main mission for them is to let the members have more knowledge and experience of the 4 element promoted by the dynamic classes (sing, eloquence, recreation and dynamic dance).
It’s definitely great to see them working together and providing students with entertainment and promoting their campus at the same time!
Do you miss going back to your university/college? Share this with your friends that you would go to a Minecraft campus with!
