Awkward situations are so cringey! We feel you. But sometimes, they’re unavoidable. The best thing you can do is to not overthink. When life throws you lemons, you make lemonade!
Here are some of our tips for when you find yourself in these situations:
#1 When you want to introduce someone only to forget their name
You run into someone, but you’ve forgotten their name. Cue cricket sounds.
Our tip: Honesty is the best policy! Explain that you’re bad with remembering names and need to be reminded of theirs. After all, if it’s someone you wanna hang out with next time, you’ve gotta call them by their name and save them into your contacts.
#2 Saying bye to someone and then realising you’re taking the same LRT route
A classic awkward situation.
Our tip: We suggest you laugh it off together and say your farewells again when you’re going separate ways for real.
#3 Telling juicy gossip and then stopping halfway because you realise it was supposed to be a secret
Oh snap! You weren’t supposed to be spilling the tea. How do you fix this?
Our tip: Change to another topic (Malaysian faves: the weather and traffic), or just whip out some munchies! There’s no better way of distracting people.
#4 When you arrive a few minutes late to hang out with your best friend
They’ve only been waiting for 10 minutes but you still feel guilty.
Our tip: Come clean and apologise for not being punctual.
#5 Sending a personal WhatsApp message to the wrong chat group
We feel your pain, especially if you accidentally said something inappropriate in a work group.
Our tip: Quickly delete all the messages, apologise for the mix-up, then NEVER SPEAK ABOUT IT AGAIN.
#6 When you run into your crush unexpectedly
It’s exciting to run into someone you’re attracted to, but the plan was to be the best version of yourself!
Our tip: Be cool, my friends. If they smile or talk to you, just remember that you’ve got your personality to help you—and munchies you happen to keep in your bag. Offer them some and start a good conversation. Shoot your shot!
#7 When you invite your friends to hang out, but they don’t know each other very well
Just because you’re friends with them doesn’t mean they’re friends with each other! It might get a bit awkward at first, but it’ll be fun eventually.
Our tip: Break the ice by bringing some munchies for everyone! You can munch on them while getting to know each other and watching a movie together, and make the atmosphere more comfortable.
