Some of us in Malaysia were treated with clear skies to be able to see the Super Blood Moon lunar eclipse yesterday, and unfortunately others were met with cloudy skies and rain.
Astronomy enthusiasts who were able to witness the event were able to capture the magnificent moment and soon, social media was flooded with pictures of the Blood Moon.
Malaysians were also able to catch the phenomenon through the National Planetarium’s Facebook and YouTube as the telescope facilities at the Planetarium are closed due to the MCO.
Mohd Zamri Shah Mastor, the National Planetarium Planet Observation Unit senior principal assistant director, shared that the last time a lunar eclipse like this occurred was 18 years ago in 2003.
He noted that the lunar eclipse known as the “Super Flower Blood Moon” is actually compromised of three phenomena happening simultaneously where the Super Moon is because the moon looks slightly bigger as it is closest to the earth, which is around seven per cent bigger than other full moons.
“The full moon phenomenon causes the moon to look reddish for around 15 minutes during the lunar eclipse face… ‘Blood Moon’ will only occur during 7.11pm to 7.26pm,” he shared during the telecast.
“However the Super Moon and Flower Moon can be seen throughout the night till dawn.”
All over the world, many others were able to gaze their eyes on the rare natural phenomenon and photographers were able to capture the lunar event alongside stunning landscapes and famous landmarks.
