Viktor Axelsen of Denmark beat China’s three-Olympics gold medal streak after a 21-15, 21-12 straight game victory against Chen Long.
The world ranking #2 player defeated the former champion in 50 minutes and broke down in tears of joy.
He proceeded to celebrate his victory with his coach before Chen Long walked over to congratulate him and had a conversation in Chinese before exchanging their attire with each other.
Viktor Axelsen defeated Wang Tzu-wei (Taipei), Shi Yuqi (China), and Kevin Cordón (Guatemala) while Chen Long beat Lee Zii Jia (Malaysia), Chou Tien-chen (Taipei) and Anthony Sinisuka Ginting (Indonesia) before they reached the Badminton men’s singles final match.
The Danish badminton player and 2017 World Champion became the first European player to hold the World Junior Championships title in 2010 and was crowned European men's singles champion in 2016 and 2018.
He entered the All England Open as the defending champion in March this year but lost to Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia after a gruelling 3 set match final game.
Congratulations, Viktor Axelsen!
