Miku Expo 2017 is almost upon us, and while Vocaloid fans are already gearing up for it, many others may be wondering: who on Earth is Hatsune Miku?
The simple explanation is that she is a virtual singer. Miku is one of several characters known as Vocaloids developed by Crypton Future Media. The concept behind Vocaloids is that they are ‘singers in a box’ – synthesised voices that can be used to create songs. There are several different voices available, but Miku remains by far the most popular of them all.
If you want to hear more, here are 5 things you should know about Hatsune Miku.
#1 She was born on 31 August 2007
Yes, you read that right! Miku was born the day our country celebrated 50 years of independence (through completely unrelated circumstances, of course). Her voice is sampled from Japanese voice actress Saki Fujita, who has also worked on shows like Attack on Titan and Durarara!!
#2 She is literally a ‘voice of the future’.
And no, we aren’t misusing the word here. Her name comes from the words hatsu (first), ne (sound or voice), and miku (future); so, put together, Hatsune Miku literally means ‘first voice of the future’!
#3 Her singing abilities are nearly limitless
Being a computer-generated voice, Miku can do many things that human singers cannot, including singing in other languages. This has allowed thousands of songs to be created using her voice. Fun fact: all of Miku’s songs are created by her fans!
#4 She has been on US late night television
Miku made TV history when she appeared on The Late Show With David Letterman in 2014 as the musical guest. A holographic projection of Miku performed the song “Sharing the World”, much to the amazement (and possibly confusion) of the audience.
#5 She has worked with many famous artistes
Miku rose to international prominence when she opened Lady GaGa’s Artpop tour with a performance of her song “Glass Wall”. Her song “Last Night, Good Night” also received a Pharrell Williams remix.
We’ve only just scratched the surface with this brief rundown on Hatsune Miku. If you’d like to hear more, or better yet, see more of her, you can do so at Miku Expo 2017, which will be hitting Malaysian shores this 16 December! Tickets are still available, so hurry and get them before they run out!
