The National Board of Review has named Wicked as the Best Film of 2024, celebrating the movie adaptation of the iconic Broadway musical with three prestigious honors in total.
In addition to the top prize, Jon M. Chu was awarded Best Director, and stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande received a Special Spotlight Award for their “creative collaboration” on the project.
The film, a critical and commercial success already positioned as a strong Oscars contender, captivated audiences with its blend of powerful performances, stunning visuals, and unforgettable music. The NBR’s awards are determined by a diverse voting body of film enthusiasts, industry professionals, academics, and students.
“Wicked represents the pure magic that movies can bring to audiences,” said NBR president Annie Schulhof in a statement. “Every detail is beautifully crafted and designed, the actors are all exceptional, and the music is second-to-none — together, it adds up to a transporting experience like no other. The NBR is proud to honor director Jon M. Chu and his remarkable cinematic vision.”
With its recognition from the NBR, Wicked continues to build momentum as one of the year’s standout films, solidifying its place as a landmark cinematic achievement.
