You might have faked a sick leave to go somewhere before but you’ll never be the girl that got fired after getting caught on live TV!
Digital content producer Nina Farooqi, was fired after she faked a sick leave to catch the Euro semi-final match and got caught by her boss after she appeared celebrating a goal on television.
She initially thought she could blend in with the crowd of 66,000 but she knew her game was over after she realised that she appeared on cameras and received a call from her boss the next morning.
“"My friend won the ticket in her work ballot, and knew I'd do anything to get to the game - there was no way I was going to turn it down,” Nina said to the Telegraph.
"This hasn’t come around since 1996, I vividly remember crying on my mum's sofa when Gareth Southgate missed his penalty, and the football fan in me just couldn’t do it. Football is my life."
Knowing that her company was unlikely to approve her last-minute holiday request because of the lack of staff, she decided to fake an MC and went to the game with her companion.
She felt nervous after realising her seat was right behind the goal and her instinct was right after England won their equaliser and her face appeared, celebrating the goal with her English flag wrapped around her.
"We were all over the news, my face was on every television screen across the world,” she said. “I had friends from Australia and America telling me they’d seen me.”
“I was even on Stacey Dooley's Instagram story. My phone blew up. The whole world had seen me celebrating. The rational part of me thought, 'oh no, is this going to come back to haunt me?'"
Despite rushing back by train at 6am after the match, her boss told her to not bother going in to work after she was caught on live TV.
“That’s their call and the consequence of what I did. There is a bit of regret, no one wants to get fired, but then also I would have hated the regret of missing out. I’d do it all over again."
