Families and friends of COVID-19 patients around the world are not allowed to visit for fear of spreading the virus and it’s especially painful to not be with your loved ones during these hard times.
Maura Lewinger from New York, recently opened up about how she had lost her husband, Joe, to COVID-19 and how she was lucky to be able to be with him virtually in his final moments.
She revealed that she was on video call with her husband and even played their wedding song one last time before he passed away.
“I thanked him for being the most amazing husband, for making me feel cherished and loved every single day,” she said, adding that she queued up a special tune after the doctor told her Joe no longer had a pulse.
“I played our wedding song for him. And then that was it,” she said. “So I was with him when he passed.”
She explained that her husband didn’t have any pre-existing health problems and only started with mild symptoms like low-grade fever, but it escalated into respiratory difficulty.
After he was admitted to the hospital, she would spend almost 24/7 with him on video call “to not let him feel alone” and calm him down.
She “begged him not to leave us and told him we all needed him” when the doctor said his condition was worsening, and that’s when she decided to play their wedding song on a loop before the doctors called to tell her about his final moments.
“He always had a listening ear, no matter what you were talking about, Joe was always listening. He always felt like you were the most important person in the room,” she told CNN. “He always took care of me, got me my coffee and helped me in every way.”
“People are just not being careful. People are being so invincible-feeling and they think it can’t happen to them,” she said. “You cannot, cannot, be with people that are not in your house. As sad and lonely and everything that is, you must, must stay with only the people in your house.”
Maura said that “it sometimes just feels like he’s at work” and described him as “a loving husband, father, friend and school assistant principal. He worked hard every single day to do this part to make this world a better place. He touched the lives of everyone he met and was always willing to offer help, support, guidance and advice.”
Rest in peace, Joe.
