Many of us have definitely experienced suddenly waking up during the night. Sometimes it’s because of a sound, sometimes it’s a nightmare, and sometimes it seems like you’ve woken up for no reason.

But imagine waking up to find a mouse chewing on your eyeball.

Yes. A mouse chewing on an eyeball.

A woman from Australia lived a waking nightmare when she woke up in the middle of the night to the feeling of a mouse trying to nibble on her eyeball.

The farmer’s wife from rural New South Wales, was hospitalised after the traumatizing event.

According to reports, the woman is one of many victims of the mice plague that swept across the region.

Speaking to multiple people who live in the rural and regional areas affected by the plague, The Times revealed that many have experienced similar horror stories and close encounters with the rodents.

Mick Harris, a farmer from Narromine, shared his terrifying waking experience saying that he “felt a tickly, furry sensation as it crawled from behind” his ear across to his cheek.

“For the rest of the night I didn’t sleep a wink – until I caught the mouse in a trap under the bed,” he said.

“We’ve got two young kids,” he added. “It does make you worry that when they wake up crying it’s because they have mouse in their bed.”

Even hospitals are not safe from the mice plague as patients have reported being bitten by mice while they were receiving treatment. NSW Health confirmed that three patients at hospitals in Tottenham, Walgett and Gulargambone, have suffered injuries from mice attacks.

The plague have not only been causing injuries to humans, it has also caused massive damage to homes, cars, crops, sheds, and more. It has been estimated that the mice have caused more than $1 billion (RM4.19 billion) in damages so far.

Speaking to A Current Affair, Shirilee Jackson shared that the mice had managed to do huge damage to her car while she was asleep.

“It’s just unreal, in a matter of 10 hours,” the mother-of-three said. “I’ve woken up at five o’clock in the morning to find the seatbelts chewed, the heater unit, flooring, head rest, and child’s car seat chewed”.

Reports shared that New South Wales is suffering from the worst rodent infestation in decades.

Following the devastating bushfires and a years-long drought, the region enjoyed a boost in grain harvest however along with it, came a bump in the number of rodents in the south-eastern state.

A combination of ideal weather conditions for breeding and a bountiful harvest caused the massive increase of mice. With plenty of grain to feed on, and diminished populations of predators that died during the drought, the mice flourished and were left to wreck havoc.
