If you’re someone who is facing a deadline, suffers from procrastination and lives in Tokyo, Japan… This cool café is definitely the place for you.
The “Manuscript Writing Café” is a clean, well-lit café in western Tokyo that’s dedicated to customers who are looking for a highly productive environment to get their work done by the end of the day.
The catch here is that once you enter and get a seat, you will not be able to leave until your work is completely finished.

The anti-procrastination café has 10 seats reserved for writers, editors, manga artists and basically anyone who needs to chase after a deadline. These seats are fully equipped with charging ports, high-speed WIFI and the coffee and tea are unlimited and self-serve.
To get a seat, customers must write down their names, work goals and the time they plan to finish. They can also ask for progress checks by the café’s staff to keep them accounted for their work under three categories to choose from – “mild” being the staff asking if they have finished as they pay, “normal” being a check-in every hour and “hard” is having a staff standing frequently behind them to emit the deadly silent pressure to get their work done.

The owner, Takuya Kawai is a writer himself and he hoped that the rules and environment of the café would help people focus and use every second of their time to the fullest.
“Instead of monitoring, I’m here to support them… As a result the work that they thought would take a day was actually completed in three hours,” he shared.
The café charges 130 yen (RM4.35) for the first 30 minutes and then 300 yen (RM10) every successive hour. Despite a couple of customers staying past the official closing time, they have all eventually gotten their work done!

The café was originally a livestreaming space but was hit badly by the pandemic. However, Takuya is now hopeful that word of mouth about his café can spread further to attract more hardworking customers.
“I don’t know what kind of work might take place, but I’m proud to be able to offer my support so that the things written here can be published to the whole world,” he said.
