History has been made at the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards and the internet is celebrating!
Zendaya has taken home the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama and her win makes her the youngest-ever winner in the category!
With the current pandemic, this year’s Emmy awards looked a lot different from what we’re used to. Instead of red carpets, high fashion and grand announcements, the award show took a virtual turn and saw its nominees tuning in via video chat to await the verdict of their categories.
When host Jimmy Kimmel announced Zendaya’s win in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama category, the recently turned 24-year-old was clearly shocked and excited as she was surrounded by her family and friends at home.
The actress beat out Jennifer Aniston, Olivia Colman, Sandra Oh, Laura Linney and Jodie Comer to clinch the award for her role in Euphoria but she thanked them saying in her acceptance speech saying, “Thank you to all of the other incredible women in this category. I admire you so much.”
Thanking her family, team and Euphoria creator Sam Levinson, Zendaya addressed the creator saying, “I appreciate you so much; you’re my family. I’m so grateful for Rue. I’m so grateful that you trusted me with your story.”
“I know this feels like a really weird time to be celebrating,” she continued. “But I just want to say that there is hope in the young people put there. I know that our TV show doesn’t always feel like a great example of that, but there is hope in the young people. And I just want to say to all my peers out there doing the work in the streets, I see you, I admire you, I thank you.”
All over the internet, fans are rejoicing and celebrating over Zendaya’s historical win, with many applauding her achievements and her well-deserved award.
We’re super happy over Zendaya’s win and for creating history in the process!
Congratulations Zendaya!
