If you’ve yet to hear, the Road to Gold (RTG) initiative under the Ministry of Youth and Sports is getting all geared up for the Olympics in Paris (2024) and Los Angeles (2028), so that our country can win their first gold on the global stage!

Selected Malaysian athletes with potential will be given the necessary training and support—including medical services and personal development—from industry experts, along with former athletes Datuk Wira Lee Chong Wei and Datuk Nicol Ann David.

These are the athletes (so far) that have gained entry into the RTG program

  • Dato’ Muhammad Azizulhasni Awang (Cycling)
  • Muhammad Shah Firdaus bin Sahrom (Cycling)
  • Dato’ Pandelela Rinong Pamg (Diving)
  • Nur Dhabitah Sabri (Diving)
  • Mohamad Aniq Kasdan (Weightlifting)
  • Ng Tze Yong (Badminton)
  • Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik (Badminton)
  • Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi (Badminton)
  • Pearly Tan and M Thinaah (Badminton)
  • Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei (Badminton)

Besides familiar faces like cyclist pro Azizul, dive master Pandelela, and aquatic diver star Dhabitah, a more recent addition to the list is 21-year-old weightlifter Mohamad Aniq Kasdan.

It’s no surprise too that more than half of the list is made up of badminton players—a sport that has become synonymous with Malaysian sports.

RTG will also extend an invite to squash players now that it’s officially an Olympic sport!

Last month, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced the inclusion of squash at the Olympic Games 2028 in Los Angeles.

It’s a great opportunity for Malaysia to shine, seeing that we recently picked up 3 golds at the Asian Games. Of course, it also helps that we’re home to international squash legend, Datuk Nicol, who has been roped in to develop a strategic plan to set our players on a path for that #1 spot.

Keep up with RTG’s efforts and our country’s gold-winning progress by visiting the Ministry of Youth and Sport’s official website, Facebook, and Instagram.
